Foreign ship confiscated for illegal transportation of live crabs
A foreign company has lost not only profit, but its ship as well for transportation of crabs. Bailiffs handed the ship over to the territorial office of the Federal State Property Management Agency.
Officials of the Border Office of the Federal Security Service for Kamchatka Territory were patrolling the Sea of Okhotsk and when they saw an unidentified object on their locator. The ship did not want to contact, tried to escape and halted only after a chase and several shots of signal rockets. The observation team came aboard the Korum ship and found 30 tonnes of live crabs in its holds. The ship did not have technical means of control, documents on daily catch or the permit to get water biological resources. The captain showed a bill of lading in accordance with which the cargo was accepted aboard from a schooner in the exclusive economic zone of Japan. But that did not save the day.
In accordance with federal laws “On fishery and preservation of water biological resources”, “On animals” the live king crabs were returned to the sea. The ship was transported to the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and put under arrest. A criminal investigation was launched against the Captain over an ecologic crime under part 2 of article 253 of the Russian Penal Code. The foreign company owning the ship is held administrative liable for the violation under part 1 of article 8.17 of the Russian Code of Administrative Violations. The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Court confiscated the Korum ship.
A few days ago bailiffs of the Inter-district Office executed the judicial decision and handed the confiscated ship over to the territorial office of the Federal State Property Management Agency.
